Citymapper Introduces COVID-19 City Mobility Index

In mid-March, Citymapper introduced a new feature called the City Mobility index. The index tracks the amount of trips planned on the app versus typical usage over the same period. It also tracks lockdown measures in cities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The big_change parameter is bool, indicating consistency with the previous day. During the pandemic, a city may have a high mobility index, but a low one would indicate that lockdown measures are keeping people from getting to work and school.

COVID-19 Government Response Stringency Index

The COVID-19 Government Response Stringency Index was developed by the University of Oxford in order to measure the variation in government responses to the sanitary crisis. This index plots government response to COVID-19 cases against the country's stringency level. It does not measure the appropriateness of government policies, but offers a means for countries to compare and learn from each other. The index was not created until May of 2021, so the results are still preliminary.

Google Mobility Report

The latest data from Google's COVID-19 Community Mobility Reports (CMMR) shows that grocery shopping has dropped by 16% in Hong Kong, transit hub use has fallen by 47%, and park usage has decreased by 50% in Singapore. The company says its data closely matches Bayley 2020 dataset and real-time movement data. The latest data from Google suggests that the lockdown has negatively affected travel in many cities. However, it is not clear why these results are so alarming.

Apple Maps

While the majority of applications for iOS provide directions to the nearest location, the new Citymapper app is an entirely different animal. While Google Maps and Apple Maps focus on driving, Citymapper is dedicated to public transportation and bicycle routes. It updates its maps regularly with information on the latest bus and metro schedules in 41 major cities. The app is free and easy to use, and it's an excellent alternative to Google Maps.

Transport for London

Transport for London (TfL) is a local government organisation in London responsible for the management of transport services and implementing the Mayor's transport strategy. The agency is governed by a board appointed by the Mayor, which is chaired by Boris Johnson. The organization is responsible for regulating the private hire trade, managing the city's major roads, and enforcing the congestion charge scheme. In addition to its role as a transport regulator, TfL also oversees traffic lights and taxis.

Citymapper

The Citymapper city mobility index was released in mid-March to measure the effects of lockdown measures enacted during the COVID-19 pandemic. The index compares the number of trips a city's citizens plan using its app with the usual usage period. In the case of London, the Citymapper index follows a standardized coverage of the city. The number of trips planned on a day is expressed in percentages.
